Why Make Homemade Granola?

We love granola, but store-bought versions are usually packed with sugar, preservatives, or ingredients we don’t actually want. We wanted a simple, healthy granola recipe that we could mix into different snacks– like my Peanut Butter Yogurt Bowls— and that’s how this healthy granola was born.

Customizing Your Granola

This is a basic granola recipe that is able to be customized to your taste. Use whatever nuts or seeds you like, adjust the maple syrup to make it more or less sweet, sprinkle on some maple sugar, or add your favorite dried fruits. Whatever you and the people you’re cooking for enjoy will work here. The possibilities are endless.

When to Add Dried Fruit or Chocolate

If you’re adding dried fruit, stir it in after the granola is done baking so it doesn’t overcook. You can also add in some cacao nibs or chocolate chips at the end for a little more sweetness.

How to Get Homemade Granola to Form Clusters

The maple syrup in the recipe helps the granola stick together and form those delicious little clusters. I don’t usually stir the granola during cooking because I don’t want to break up the clusters.
If you don’t want clusters, then take it out after 15 minutes, stir, and put it back in for another 15 minutes. For bigger clusters, don’t spread the granola too thin on the baking sheet — keeping it closer together helps it clump naturally.

Makes:
12- 1/4 cup servings

  • 2 cups of rolled oats
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil, melted
  • ¼ cup sliced almonds
  • ¼ cup chopped pecans
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • A pinch of salt

How to Make Homemade Granola

  1. Pre-heat oven to 300℉
  2. Mix granola ingredients together in a large bowl
  3. Spread out in a thin layer on a baking sheet
  4. Bake at 300℉ for 30 minutes
Can I use instant oats to make homemade granola?

You can. However, using the rolled oats works better. They crisp more and the larger oats taste a lot better once they’re toasted than the thinner instant oats, but instant oats will do in a pinch.

When do I add dried fruit to homemade granola?

You’ll want to add dried fruit at the end after the granola comes out of the oven.

When should I add chocolate to homemade granola?

You’ll want to add it at the end after the granola comes out of the oven and has had time to cool.

How do I store homemade granola?

Store your granola in an airtight container.
